Eye Examination
Medical Spanish: ophthalmologist (oftalmólogo) or optometrist (optometrista)
"Eye doctor" is also referred to as "oculista."
1. Tape el ojo izquierdo y lea las letras de la línea superior.
(Cover the left eye, and read the letters of the upper line.)
2. Ahora lea la letras de la línea siguiente.
(Now read the letters of the next line.)
3. ¿Puede ver bien las letras pequeñas?
(Can you see the letter letters ok?)
4. Mire fijamente ese punto en la pared.
(Stare at that point on the wall.)
5. Tape el otro ojo.
(Cover the other eye.)
6. ¿Los ojos le duelen o lagrimean durante el día?
(Do the eyes hurt or tear up during the day?)
7. ¿Le molesta la luz en los ojos?
(Does the light bother your eyes?)
8. Le voy a colocar estas gotas para dilatar las pupilas.
(I am going to place these drops to dilate the pupils.)
9. Espere aquí mientras las gotas hacen efecto.
(Wait here while the drops take effect.) Note: Literally, the verb "hacer" means "to do," or "to make."
9b. Apoye aquí el mentón.
(Rest your chin here.)
10. Acerque su cara a este aparato y no se mueva.
(Bring your face near to this apparatus and do not move.)
11. Dígame con cuál ve mejor, ¿con éste... o con éste?
(Tell me with which do you see better, with this... or with this?)
12. Voy a apagar la luz para ver dentro de su ojo con esta luz.
(I am going to turn off the light to see inside of your eye with this light.)
13. Necesita lentes correctivos.
(You need corrective lenses.)
14. Hay problemas para ver de cerca / de lejos.
(There are problems with seeing near / far.)
15. Hay una infección que necesita tratamiento.
(There is an infection that needs treatment.)
16. Tiene una catarata en el ojo derecho / ojo izquierdo.
(You have a cataract in the right eye / left eye.)
17. Ambos ojos tienen cataratas.
(Both eyes have cataracts.)
18. Una catarata es una opacidad en el lente natural de su ojo.
(A cataract is an opacity in the natural lens of your eye.)
19. Puede usar gafas o lentes de contacto.
(You can use glasses or contact lenses.)
20. Los anteojos los venden en el centro óptico.
(They sell glasses in the optical center.) Note: Observe the different ways to say "glasses," (los lentes, las gafas, los anteojos).
21. En la óptica puede conseguir la montura de su preferencia.
(In the optical center, you can find the frame of your preference.)
22. El problema de la vista no puede ser corregido con anteojos. Necesita cirugía.
(The visual problem cannot be corrected with glasses. You/he/she needs surgery.)
