Descriptions of Diagnostic Studies

Medical Spanish: descriptions of diagnostic studies and procedures

(Lumbar puncture: After giving you a local anesthesia, we are going to intruduce a needle through the intervertebral space to extract spinal fluid, and then send it to the laboratory for analisis.) Note: Literally it says, "After placing a local anesthesia..."

(Computerized axial tomography: We are going to do a CT, a procedure in which they take a series of photographs in transverse cuts (like slices) of a specific zone of the body.)

(Culture: We are going to send a sample of blood / urine / sputum / stool, to the laboratory, where it will be kept under observation for two or three days to determine the causative germ of the infection.)

(Endoscopy: A tube equipped with a camera is introduced through a body orifice. That permits the internal visualization of certain structures, such as the stomach, small intestine, large intestine, uterus, or bladder.) Note: "Delgado" and "grueso" mean "thin" and "thick," but in English these structures are named with "small" and "large."

(Fine needle biopsy: Following local antiseptic at the site of the lesion, a syringe connected to a fine needle is introduced. Pulling up on the plunger, the largest quantity possible of the nodule or secretion is extracted, and sent to the laboratory for analysis.) Note: Literally it says, "Making negative pressure on the plunger..."
