Papá: Por favor, ¡ayúdeme doctor! La niña casi no puede respirar. Le duele el pecho y se está poniendo azul.
(Please help me doctor! The girl can hardly breathe. Her chest hurts and she is turning blue.) Note: The literal translation would be, "To her (indirect object) hurts the chest." This is the customary way to say that a body part is in pain.
Doctor: Déjeme examinarla. ¿Cuándo empezó esto? ¿Ha tenido tos o fiebre?
(Let me examine her. When did this begin? Has she had cough or fever?)
Papá: No, doctor, ella estaba bien. Estaba en la casa jugando con mi otra hija y de repente empezó a toser.
(No, doctor, she was fine. She was in the house playing with my other daughter and suddenly she began to cough.)
Doctor: ¿Con qué estaban jugando? El pulmón derecho parece no estar ventilando.
(With what were they playing? The right lung does not seem to be ventilating.)
Mamá: ¡El corazón está latiendo muy rápido!
(Her heart is beating very fast!)
Estudiante de medicina: Doctor, mire la oximetría de pulso. El nivel de oxígeno está bajo.
(Doctor, look at the pulse oximeter. The oxigen level is low.)
Doctor: Enfermera, por favor déle oxígeno por mascarilla.
(Nurse, please give her oxygen by mask.) Note: Observe the use of "dé," (singular formal imperative mood for the verb, "dar").
Mamá: Estaba jugando con cuentas de plástico, haciendo collares con su hermana mayor.
(She was playing with plasic beads, making necklaces with her older sister.)
Estudiante de medicina: Le voy a pedir una radiografía de tórax urgente. Me parece que hay un cuerpo extraño en la vía respiratoria, y por eso no puede respirar bien.
(I am going to request an urgent chest x-ray. It seems to me that there is a foreign body in the airway, and that is why she cannot breathe well.)
Doctor: Sí, hay una obstrucción del bronquio derecho por un cuerpo extraño, y debe ser resuelta lo más pronto posible. Estoy llamando al especialista neumonólogo.
(Yes, there is an obstruction of the right bronchus due to a foriegn body, and it must be resolved as soon as possible. I am calling the pulmonary specialist.)
Papá: ¿Qué van a hacer?
(What are they going to do?)
Doctor: Van a hacerle una broncoscopia. Se introduce en la vía respiratoria un tubo especial que tiene una lámpara para visualizar el objecto, y con una pinza, lo extraerán.
(They are going to do (to her) a bronchoscopy. A special tube is put in [introduced], that has a lamp to visualize the object, and with forceps, they will extract it.)
