Paramedic Ramón: Hola amigo, mi nombre es Ramón, y este es mi compañero Javier. Estamos aquí para ayudarte. Cuéntanos, ¿cómo te llamas y qué pasó?
(Hey buddy, my name is Ramón, and this is my colleague Javier. We are here to help you. Tell us, what is your name and what happened?) Note: The phrase, "cómo te llamas" literally means, "how do you call yourself?"
Paramedic Javier: Yo soy Javier. Contesta las preguntas de Ramón, mientras yo te examino. Acuéstate y no te muevas.
(I am Javier. Answer Ramón's questions while I examine you. Lie down and do not move.)
Calixto: Me llamo Calixto. Veníamos de mi práctica de béisbol, y había niebla. De repente había un venado frente al carro. Mami trató de esquivarlo, pero como la vía estaba húmeda, lo golpeamos y perdimos el control.
(My name is Calixto. We were coming from my baseball practice, and there was fog. Suddenly there was a deer in front of the car. Mommy tried to avoid it, but since the road was wet, we hit it and lost control.) Note: Observe that "veníamos" is the imperfect past tense of the infinitive "venir."
Paramedic Ramón: ¿Y llevaban puestos los cinturones de seguidad?
(And were you wearing the seat belts?)
Calixto: Sí, llevábamos los cinturones de seguridad, pero de repente, mi hermanito que estaba en su silla de bebé en el asiento trasero, empezó a llorar. Los dos volteamos a verlo. Yo solté mi cinturón para ayudarlo, y fue cuando ocurrió todo.
(Yes, we were wearing the seat belts, but suddently my little brother who was in the car seat in the back began to cry. We both turned around to look at him. And I unfastened my belt to help him, and it was then that everything happened.)
Paramedic Javier: Te voy a colocar este collarín para inmovilizarte el cuello, y voy a curarte porque tienes un corte en el cuero cabelludo.
(I am going to put this cervical collar on you to immobilize your neck, and I am going put a dressing on you because you have a cut on the scalp.)
Calixto: Me golpeé la cabeza y la mano contra el parabrisa, cuando atropellamos al venado.
(I hit my head and hand against the windshield when we ran over the deer.)
Paramedic Ramón: ¿Te sientes mareado? ¿Te duele la cabeza? ¿Ves algo borroso?
(Do you feel dizzy? Does your head hurt? Is your vision blurry?) Note: Literally it says, "Do you see anything (or something) blurry?"
Calixto: Tengo un poco de dolor de cabeza. No estoy mareado, y veo todo bien... ¡Ay, eso me duele!
(I have a bit of headache. I am not dizzy, and I see everything fine... Oh, that hurts!)
Paramedic Javier: Tienes una fractura de la muñeca derecha. Te voy a colocar esta férula neumática para inmovilizarla hasta que lleguemos al hospital. ¿Te saliste del carro durante el accidente, o después de que todo pasó? ¿Te desmayaste?
(You have a fracture of the right wrist. I am going to place this pneumatic splint to immobilize it until we arrive at the hospital. Did you go out of the car during the accident, or after everything happened? Did you pass out?)
Calixto: Salí del carro después del accidente. La bolsa de aire se infló en el lado donde iba sentada mi madre. Al principio, creo que me desmayé, porque cuando me desperté, pensé que era un sueño. Luego oí a mi hermanito llorando.
(I got out of the car after the accident. The air bag inflated on the side where my mother was seated. At first, I believe that I fainted, because when I woke up, I thought that it was a dream. Then I heard my little brother crying.)
Paramedic Ramón: Los paramédicos que están con tu mamá nos informan que ella está inconsciente pero estable. Traeremos a tu hermano con nosotros porque sólo está asustado. Por favor háblale un poco para ver si se tranquliza.
(The paramedics who are with your mom inform us that she is unconcious but stable. We will bring your brother with us because he is only frightened. Please talk to him a bit to see if he calms down.)
Paramedic Javier: Ellos llevarán a tu mamá al hospital en esa otra ambulancia. ¿Sabes el teléfono de algún familiar o un vecino para poderles notificar del accidente?
(They will take your mom to the hospital in that other ambulance. Do you know the telephone number of any relative or neighbor to be able to notify them of the accident?) Note: Here it is understood that "telephone" means "telephone number."
Calixto: Les puedo dar los teléfonos de mi papá y mis abuelos, para que les avisen.
(I can give you the telephone numbers of my father and my grandparents, so that you can tell them.) Note: Notice that it doesn't really say, "so that you can tell them," but rather, "so that you tell them," using the verb "avisar" in the present subjunctive case. The present subjunctive tense is frequently used in Spanish.
Paramedic Ramón: Muy bien. Ahora, nosotros los vamos a trasladar a tu hermano y a tí en nuestra unidad. Vámonos.
(Very good. Now, we are going to transfer your brother and you in our unit. Let's go.) Note: Notice that if the object is a person, it is preceded by "a," as in "a tu hermano."
