Doctora: Señora, ¿qué sucede, por qué viene tan apresurada?
(Ma'am, what is happening? Why do you come in such a hurry? Literally, "so much in a hurry?")
Mamá: Es que mi niño se muere. No puede comer. Todo lo vomita, y casi ni llora ni se mueve.
(It's that my boy is dying. He cannot eat. He vomits everything, and hardly cries or moves.)
Doctora: Tengo que ponerle una hidratación endovenosa de inmediato. ¿Cuándo empezó a vomitar así?
(I have to give him IV fluid (an intravenous hydration) immediately. When did he begin to vomit like this?)
Mamá: Hace un mes que nació, y todo estaba normal. Pero, hace tres días, de repente, empezó a vomitar cada vez que le daba el pecho.
(He was born a month ago, (Literally, "it makes one month that he was born,") and everything was normal. But 3 days ago, suddenly, he began to vomit every time that I breastfed him. Literally, "gave him the breast.")
Doctora: ¿Tuvo algún otro síntoma?
(Did he have any other symptom?)
Mamá: No, sólo lloraba muy duro porque estaba hambriento, y tomaba el pecho, pero después vomitaba todo lo que había comido. Ahora, no está llorando normalmente, y está inactivo.
(No, he was only crying hard because he was hungry, and he was taking the breast, but afterwards he was vomiting everything that he had eaten. Now he is not crying normally, and is inactive.) Note: "habia comido" is an example of pluperfect verb tense.
Doctora: Voy a pedir una evaluación por cirugía pediátrica. Algunos bebés que tienen síntomas similares pueden tener una estrechez de la vía digestiva, que les impide comer normalmente.
(I am going to request an evaluation by pediatric surgery. Some babies that have similar symptoms can have a narrowing of the digestive tract, that impedes them from eating normally.)
Mamá: ¿Y eso es grave doctora? ¿Lo tiene que hospitalizar?
(And that is grave, doctor? Do you have to hospitalize him?)
Doctora: Sí, lo vamos a hospitalizar. Le voy a pedir una prueba de sangre y un ultrasonido del estómago, mientras llega el cirujano. Esto parece un caso de estenosis pilórica.
(Yes, we are going to hospitalize him. I am going to request a blood test and an ultrasound of the stomach while the surgeon arrives. This seems to be a case of pyloric stenosis.)
