Medical Spanish for healthcare providers: radiology instructions - CT scan & MRI
Most of the following statements are helpful for either type of study, and a few are specific for one or the other.
1. Vamos a tomarle fotografías especiales hechas en cortes transversales muy pequeños.
(We are going to take special photographs of you, done in very small transverse cuts.)
2. Si su estudio requiere mostrar detalles específicos, vamos a necesitar darle una sustancia de contraste. Así que debe estar en ayunas, porque a veces esta medicina puede dar un poco de náuseas.
(If your study requires showing specific details, we are going to need to give you a contrast substance. Therefore, you must be fasting, because sometimes, this medicine can cause a bit of nausea.)
3. Es necesario que no tenga nada metálico, incluyendo joyas, prótesis dentales, o cualquier otro objeto.
(It is necessary that you not have anything metallic, including jewelry, dental prosthetics, or whatever other object.)
4. Usted no puede llevar ningún aparato electrónico, pues estos pueden interferir con el poderoso campo magnético del resonador.
(You cannot carry any electronic device, because those can interfere with the powerful magnetic field of the MRI machine.)
5. ¿Está embarazada?
(Are you pregnant?)
6. Este estudio, lo más probablemente, no pasará de 30 minutos.
(This study, most probably, will not exceed 30 minutes.) Note: To review numbers, see the back-to-basics section.
7. Desvístase y colóquese esta bata.
(Undress and put on this gown.)
8. Vaya al baño de una vez si es necesario.
(Go to the bathroom at once if it is necessary.)
9. Pase por aquí por favor.
(Go over here please.)
10. El tomógrafo es esta máquina con la forma de un túnel. Va a haber movimiento parcial de la máquina, mientras Usted permanece acostado en esta camilla en el medio.
(The CT scanner is this machine in the form of a tunnel. There is going to be partial movement of the machine, while you remain lying down on this stretcher in the middle.) Note: "Tomógrafo" here refers to CT scanner. Vocabulary for MRI machine is below.
11. El resonador magnético realmente genera un campo magnético poderoso.
(The magnetic resonator really generates a powerful magnetic field.)
12. Acuéstese aquí, por favor.
(Lie down here, please.)
13. Voltéese hacia su lado derecho... y ahora, hacia su lado izquerdo.
(Turn to your right side... and now, to your left side.)
14. Acuéstese boca arriba, sobre su espalda.
(Lie down face up, on your back.) Note: Literally, it says "mouth up."
15. Acuéstese boca abajo, sobre su abdomen.
(Lie face down, on your abdomen.) Note: Literally, it says "mouth down."
16. Apoye su cabeza aquí.
(Rest your head here.)
17. Le voy a sujetar la cabeza a la camilla para evitar movimientos repentinos.
(I am going to fasten your head to the stretcher to avoid sudden movements.)
18. Si tiene miedo a los espacios cerrados, o no tolera estar en la misma posición por largo tiempo, debe decírmelo ahora, y le colocaremos un sedante.
(If you have fear of closed spaces, or do not tolerate being in the same position for a long time, you must tell me it now, and we will give you a sedative.)
19. La camilla estará moviéndose lentamente dentro del tomógrafo.
(The stretcher will be moving slowly inside of the CT scanner.) Note: To say "MRI machine" instead of "CT scanner," you would say "resonador magnético." See statement number 11 above.
20. Una vez que esté en la posición correcta, debe manternerse calmado, en silencio, y sin moverse.
(Once that you are in the correct position, you must maintain yourself calm, in silence, and without moving yourself.)
21. Probablemente sea necesario contener la respiración durante partes del estudio. Si es así, le indicaré cuando hacerlo.
(It is probably necessary to hold the breath during parts of the study. If it is like that, I will indicate when to do it.)
22. Yo estaré en aquella habitación adyacente, detrás del vidrio, controlando la máquina.
(I will be that adjacent room, behind the glass, controlling the machine.)
23. Está listo. Vamos a empezar.
(It is ready. We are going to begin.) Note: "Está listo" could also mean "you are ready," for a male patient, and "lista" means "ready" for a female.
